Rose Wylie
She leaves a baited pause before answering and then delivers an answer that makes things no clearer. Rose could be not be more Rose. And the sixth shot of the contact sheet perfectly summed her up for me. Slightly distracted, probably wanting to be in peace at work in her cottage, perched forward on the chair ready to spring up, knees clamping her hands together as if to stop them betraying her darting mind and grabbing a brush to start work or stroking her loved cat, feet tucked under her, childlike. And its this childlike bristling energy that radiates, its in her work and its in the beautiful chaos of her studio, so beyond messy that you tip toe across as if it were an installation or some sort of Rose phrenological map of scattered thoughts and ideas.
Photographed at the studio of Rose Wylie in the midst of painting 'Snow White (3) with Duster' for her exhibition titled Let it Settle at the Windsor Gallery, Florida. The exhibition presented a group of paintings and drawings that reflect the artist’s interest in popular culture, deftly merging political, social and autobiographical elements. The exhibition was curated by Rodolphe von Hofmannsthal of David Zwirner and Jari-Juhani Lager, Wylie’s long-time representative.
Shot in conjunction with Art Wise Curators as part of the Tomorrows Tigers sale at Sothebys auctioneers.
